North Macedonia Declares Electricity Supply Crisis

The Government of North Macedonia has officially declared a national electricity supply crisis, an emergency measure that will initially last for seven days. The decision is a response to the severe difficulties the country is facing in acquiring heavy fuel oil, which is essential for the operation of its power plants. At the proposal of the Crisis Management Steering Committee, the Executive has activated contingency protocols to prevent a system collapse and ensure service to the population.

Emergency measures adopted:

• Release of reserves: The State has authorized the use of mandatory oil product reserves for power plants at no cost. • Strict consumption control: Power plants must submit daily reports on fuel expenditure to the Ministry of Finance to optimize available resources. • Logistics monitoring: Constant monitoring of the supply chain for inputs is maintained due to market instability.

The lack of supplies has jeopardized the stability of the national energy system, forcing Skopje to implement these drastic measures to mitigate the impact on industry and household consumption.
